Abstract

This study aimed to describe self-esteem among individuals attending gyms in Tangerang City. A quantitative, non-experimental approach with a descriptive design was employed. Participants were 130 individuals aged 18–40 years who had been actively attending a gym for at least three months and were domiciled in or exercised at a gym located in Tangerang City. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Self-esteem was measured using a scale based on the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI), which was grounded in the aspects of power, significance, virtue, and competence. The instrument was tested on 35 respondents during the tryout stage. After item selection, 10 items were retained, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.873. Data from the 130 main respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics and categorization based on hypothetical norms. The empirical scores ranged from 16 to 46, with a mean of 30.146 and a standard deviation of 9.074. The results showed that 70 respondents (53.8%) were categorized as having low self-esteem, while 60 respondents (46.2%) were categorized as having high self-esteem. Descriptively, low self-esteem was slightly more prevalent among both male and female respondents. Respondents who had attended the gym for more than seven months showed a higher proportion of the high self-esteem category than respondents in the shorter-duration groups. These findings provide an empirical description of self-esteem in gym-going individuals in Tangerang City; however, the descriptive design does not permit conclusions regarding relationships or causal effects.
